States resist steep traffic fine hike

PENALTY PROTEST New Delhi, Aug. 23: The Centre's bid to introduce steep hikes in traffic fines through amendments in the Motor Vehicles Act has been opposed by several states. "Several states have written to us saying the fines are way above the paying capacity of a majority of the population. They want the government to review its decision," a senior transport official said. It became contentious after the transport reform measures were introduced and has been stuck as states are opposing certain measures," said an official in road transport minister Nitin Gadkari's office. "We decided to make amendments in the act, but it's unfortunate that the states are objecting to them," he added.
