State Highway 1 near Kaikōura reopens after rockfall crushes man's car


A close look at ground level destruction to State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura following the 7.8 earthquake. State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura has reopened with traffic management in place after a rockfall rained boulders down on a passing motorist. Andrew Patterson was on his way from Picton to Christchurch on Friday when four large rocks smashed into his car near the Parititahi tunnel, just south of Peketa. Stones caved in the car's roof and smashed the front windscreen, forcing Patterson to climb out of a door window.
