Ariel was the first international success for its writer-director Aki Kaurismaki, an original talent with a highly distinctive, deadpan style. Name any year in film history, from 1895 to the present day, and I can produce a top 10 list. When I first watched Ariel it was when I set myself the goal of watching every entry in the book 1001 Films You Must See Before Die. Perhaps if I had undertaken this task in my 20s or early 30s I might recall every film. Better to cling to this explanation than admit to human frailty.
