Editors at The Star asked the photographers to choose their best photos of 2021 and to share their thoughts about photojournalism, ideas on the creative process and even the story behind their best shot. One evening in early October, the sky was offering flashes of light in the distance due to a storm. Half an hour later, when we returned home, the sky was still lit and did not seem to be slowing down. The best of them were represented in a online gallery I posted later that night. Sometimes we can plan around those challenges and sometimes those challenges can lead to unexpected compositions and images that remind us of how much more there is yet to see and capture in Ventura County.
