Southlander leads four woman world record shear

Megan Whitehead says she's over the moon to have been part of a team that broke a world shearing record this week. Led by Whitehead, 23, of Gore, the women shore 2066 sheep in nine hours at Waihi-Pukawa Station near Turangi, about 50 kilometres south of Taupo on Thursday. Supplied Megan Whitehead nears the end of her own personal contribution, 608 sheep, to the 2066 sheep record set at Waihi-Pukawa Station on January 23. Despite tallying the highest of the four shearers, Whitehead was disappointed she could not break the 2007 record of 648, set by Emily Welch. Organiser Jill Angus Burney, was overwhelmed by the support for a record that cost about $15,000 to stage.
