Per person, the region has the smallest household emissions in the country – and this carbon footprint is getting smaller. That gives each dwelling an annual carbon footprint of 4.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide (on average in 2018). As travel contributes a significant portion of household emissions in these measurements, the traffic-jammed Auckland region unsurprisingly topped the household emissions table. On average, Auckland dwellings emitted an average of 6.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2018. All up, eight regions had a rising household carbon footprint between 2013 and 2018.
