England manager Gareth Southgate caused a bit of excitement by naming several young players in the squad that will face Germany and Brazil in friendly matches this month. After England’s rather dull (but efficient) World Cup qualification campaign, Southgate elected to drop some of the under-performing ‘big names’ like Daniel Sturridge and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and give these promising youngsters a chance instead. Such concerns make fans wonder how many of the England side that won the Under-17 World Cup in India will make it as professional soccer players. Of the eleven players who started the final, only the goalkeeper Freddie Woodman hasn’t played any minutes in either the Premier League or the Championship so far this season. He is currently third in the pecking order at Newcastle United and may need to drop down a few levels to get a chance to play first team soccer.
