NewsThe Southern Provincial Council has rejected the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution which aims to hold all Provincial Council (PC) elections on the same day. A tense situation had arisen today when the proposed amendment was presented to the PC, with angry exchanges between PC members. Twenty-seven PC members had voted against the proposed amendment while no votes were cast in favor. Several United National Party (UNP) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Provincial Councilors had however, reportedly left the council chambers in protest before the vote was taken.
