Southerly blast hits Wellington, sending waves over coastal road and delaying flights

A southerly blast with wind gusts of more than 120kmh is hitting Wellington with reports of waves washing debris over a coastal road. The strong wind is causing disruption to flights in and out of the capital, Wellington Airport has reported on social media, urging people to check live flight information online. Ferris said Wellington’s wind would have the power to wash waves over coastal roads, particularly at high tide around 1pm. The southerly winds would be lighter on Wednesday, he said. A Stuff reporter in Eastbourne reported waves and debris over the coastal road there.
