South Canterbury principals say graduate teachers need better support and more pay, as some schools struggle for months to fill vacancies - especially in science, technology and maths (STM) subjects. MacGregor-Reid said South Canterbury primary schools have advertised 16 vacancies in the Education Gazette to date in 2017. No South Canterbury schools meet this criteria.
