(First published January 2020)A plan to banish a putrid pong that has made Bromley arguably New Zealand’s smelliest suburb may have a minor hitch – it might just make the problem worse. Residents in the Christchurch suburb have complained of a foul stench for years, likening it to the whiff of an open bin, dead animals or rotting fish. Long-term solutions for Living Earth alone could also be costly, ranging from about $6 million a year to shut it and send compost to landfill, to upwards of $53m to move the facility. New compost recipes, misting equipment and processes are being trialled at organics processing plant Living Earth in the short-term, while “electronic noses” to track odours have already been brought in. Joe Johnson/Stuff Living Earth has already begun efforts to reduce smells from its Bromley plant.
