Children's Commissioner: Police should not pursue young people in cars

Children's Commissioner Judge Andrew Becroft says he wants police to scrap pursuits involving children and young people. Police need to stop pursuits involving children and young people to reduce the often inevitable injuries and deaths that result, Children’s Commissioner and former Youth Court Chief Judge Andrew Becroft said. He said he wasn't saying police should not try to hold the young people accountable, just that they should not achieve this through a car pursuit. With a similar population to New Zealand, Queensland had a much better record with police pursuits, Becroft said. "Because they encourage, they ramp up the situation, they egg the driver on and sometimes the driver wants to show off in front of friends or mates."
