It can be recalled that an estimated 1,000 ISIS-inspired Maute Group terrorists occupied Marawi City in Lanao del Sur on May 23, 2017, prompting President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law over the whole of Mindanao. Of course the reasons for martial law extension is a contentious issue in and of itself, with the opposition bloc contending that constitutional requirements haven’t been followed in past instances. Meanwhile, Villarin said the fate of the P2.2 billion worth of funds released for the rehabilitation of bombed-out Marawi also needs to be looked into.
