A Philippine Army soldier was killed while two others were wounded during an encounter with members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Lopez, Quezon on Monday night. He said an explosion from an improvised explosive device (IED) along the road met the troops resulting in a 30-minute firefight with the communist rebels. In a social media post, Ka Cleo del Mundo of the NPA’s Apolonio Mendoza Command in Quezon, claimed responsibility over the attacks. The offensives, she said, “were in defense of the rural areas” which she claimed are under the territorial jurisdiction of the NPA. Soldiers recovered one unexploded IED, detonating chords and personal belongings of the rebels at the encounter site.
