PALMA — There were a few people pinching themselves after Real Mallorca’s unlikely 1-0 victory over Real Madrid on Saturday, none more so than matchwinner Lago Junior and American co-owner Robert Sarver. Ivory Coast forward Lago Junior was one of two Mallorca players in Saturday’s line-up who experienced the crushing blow of relegation to the third tier of Spanish soccer in 2017. Yet 18 months later Mallorca’s unsung heroes, put together on a shoestring budget compared with Real Madrid, produced one of the greatest nights witnessed at the Son Moix stadium. On Saturday he comfortably snuffed out the threat of Madrid’s 60 million euro ($67 million) summer signing Luka Jovic. Just to be playing against Real Madrid was pretty remarkable.
