A part of the Lewis Pass has been closed because of snow on Wednesday afternoon. One of the South Island's major passes has been closed because of snowfall. State Highway 7 at the Hammer Springs Turnoff to Springs Junction on the Lewis Pass shut before 3pm on Wednesday. It said up to 2 centimetres of snow may settle near the summit of most of the South Island's major passes. "In the Canterbury High Country we were predicting snow to about 700 metres," Clark said.
