When it comes to oil, the SNP’s position is as slippery as the stuff itself, while on the subject of gas, grasping their position is about as easy as clutching a handful of that other North Sea product. That’s especially true when, as is so often the case, their message changes from week to week. Those include a hike in windfall taxes, which experts have rightly pointed out would endanger tens of thousands of jobs and place the North Sea energy sector “on death row”, as one report put it. Labour’s plans for Scotland’s oil and gas industry are indeed disastrous. The First Minister even gave a speech in New York last year saying he wanted to stop Scotland being the “oil and gas capital of Europe”.
