Slave Lake watching thunderstorm as wildfires continue to grow in northern Alberta

EDMONTON—About 370 evacuees from Peerless Trout First Nation are settled in Edmonton and staying at hotels as wildfires continue to grow in northern Alberta. Slave Lake is accommodating hundreds of people who evacuated the High Level area, who are being temporarily housed in hotels and campgrounds. On Saturday, Slave Lake Mayor Tyler Warman said wind conditions are looking favourable to keep the fire moving away from the town, but they were on alert for a thunderstorm. On Saturday, the temperature in the Slave Lake area was hovering around 25 C and Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the town. Residents of Sandy Lake, Wabasca, Chipewyan Lake Village, along with the hamlet of Marten Beach and anyone in Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, were also ordered to leave.
