Sketchbook: What it looks like when Kim Jong Un crushes sarcasm

(Cavna’s Canvas / The Washington Post 2016)SARCASM, historically regarded as one of mankind’s most pernicious inventions ever as judged by men whose names begin with “Kim Jong,” has died in North Korea this month, according to government sources within the greatest and most enlightened nation in the world. Longtime acquaintances of Sarcasm said this week from the Hermit Kingdom that they had never met him, then added that Sarcasm had always looked like a rather suspicious character. “Mark Twain should be shot for his attempt to find humor in the motive, moral or plot of life,” said an unblinking spokesman for the “Great-and-Extreme-Er-I-Mean-Supreme Leader” Kim Jong Un, before being told that Twain’s death, once so greatly exaggerated, was for more than a century not exaggerated at all. Elsewhere, the double-entendre “a hair cut” was still waiting to hear its fate. Sarcasm in North Korea is survived by Irony, at least until the Greatest and Wisest Leader in Human History figures out quite what that is.
