Sicilian national park boss narrowly escapes assassination plot by Mafia


The director of a national park in Sicily has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by the Mafia. “We’ve taken away territory from Cosa Nostra and that has affected their interests, which are worth millions of euros. RelatedAntoci, the head of Nebrodi national park, has in the past two years received threats from Cosa Nostra for his attempts to get tough on illegal activities within the mountainous corner of eastern Sicily. He said that in the past there had been “huge collusion between the Mafia and local politicians, who closed their eyes to widespread illegality. Local Mafia bosses have allegedly made tens of millions of euros through falsely claiming European Union subsidies which are supposed to help sheep farmers and local communities living within the boundaries of the park.
