Former Cabinet minister Soita Shitanda’s death is likely to re-shape Kakamega county politics ahead of the general election. Shitanda’s death has complicated matters for Jubilee, which had settled on him as its candidate for the Malava parliamentary seat and its point man in Kakamega county. Former Shinyalu MP Justus Kizito said Shitanda’s death will strengthen Jubilee in Kakamega, as it seeks to fulfil the former minister’s dream of delivering the community’s support to the government. He held the Malava parliamentary seat for 15 years until 2013, when he unsuccessfully vied for Kakamega governor on the New Ford Kenya ticket. Sources reveal that Shitanda had quietly agreed to support Governor Wycliffe Oparanya’s re-election and Shitanda would pick the governor’s running mate from his Kabara community.
