Kakamega to stop spending on state functions

The Kakamega government has changed its spending policy to give more attention to devolved functions and avoid trouble with the Auditor General’s office. Deputy Governor Philip Kutima said the county has stopped funding national government functions effective from the next financial year. Completion of the 24 centres of excellence started in secondary schools now hangs in the balance. “We have decided we shall now concentrate on devolved functions because any money we put into the national government’s is viewed as misappropriation by the Auditor General,” he said. This means the 500 secondary schools assisting teachers engaged by the county to alleviate the acute teacher shortage will be out of service starting next month.
