It appears that all the lifesavers in the world aren’t going to be enough to save Pier 1 from sinking. That’s assuming it can find somebody willing to take a look at what has become yet another retail tragedy. Pier 1 suffers from too many stores – just under 1,000 with some recent closings– and too many bad stores that are poorly situated. The stores themselves are oddly merchandised, over-assorted in some classifications and often laden with broken or dysfunctional furniture floor models. All the signs are there that the next port of call for Pier 1 will, unfortunately, be bankruptcy court.
