Skorton, who successfully completed the largest fundraising campaign in the institution’s history, announced his resignation Thursday after only 3½ years on the job. Skorton said leading the Smithsonian was a “dream experience” but that he missed working in health care. He also oversaw the 2016 opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a $540 million building that is the institution’s newest museum.
