Shette murder accused hurled abuses at other inmates: witness


A witness in the Manjula Shette murder case told the trial court on Monday that all six Byculla jail staffers accused of killing the inmate used to hurl abuses at other women prisoners too. Manjula Shette (45), who was serving a life sentence, died at the State-run JJ Hospital on June 23, 2017, after allegedly being brutally assaulted in her barrack, stripped and a baton shoved into her private parts. Witness beaten upThe witness said Manisha Pokharkar, the jailer of the prison, and constables Bindu Naikade, Waseema Shaikh, Shital Shegaonkar, Surekha Gulve and Aarti Shingne, who are accused in the case, used to hurl abuses at other inmates too. The 900-page charge sheet filed by the Mumbai Crime Branch mentions that Fazleen Shaikh, a witness in the case, was beaten up by Ms. Pokharkar. The witness confirmed Ms. Shaikh was beaten up by the accused, but did not recall if she was advised medical treatment.
