Notable weekend fights:--As impressive as he looked in winning the welterweight title vs. Danny Garcia last year, Shawn Porter (30-2-1, 17 KOs) was lucky to escape with a split decision win in his first defense vs. Yordenis Ugas (23-4). Though one judge gave Ugas the fight with a 117-111 scorecard, the other two judges overruled that by scoring it for Porter 116-112 and 115-113. On Saturday, Bivol out-classed and out-boxed the durable Smith, winning a wide unanimous decision vs. Smith to defend his world title. But he simply wasn’t on Bivol’s level, and although he has a powerful punch, he’s not good enough, at this point anyway, to win a world title. As for Bivol, he said he wants a fight vs. another champion.
