Sereno’s P17-M Piatco fees ‘illegal’

Of the total payment of $6,009,351.66, Sereno got $324,674.37, or about P17 million, court records showed. The government deducted 15 percent, leaving Sereno, a former University of the Philippines law professor, with $275,973.21 (P14.5 million). The 50-page amended decision, a copy of which was obtained by The Manila Times, was penned by Associate Justice Ramon Bato. Piatco later assailed the payment of attorney’s fees to the lawyers hired by the transportation department and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) amounting to $6,009,351.66. The payment of attorney’s fees to Sereno was raised at the House justice committee, which conducted hearings on the impeachment complaint against the magistrate.
