OTTAWA — Senators are once again defiantly challenging the Trudeau government on legislation that’s facing a court-imposed time crunch. Just over a month remains for the government and Senate to clear an impasse — and not the first — on a law that proposes to alleviate sex-based discrimination in Indian Act registration. Senators voted unanimously to send it to the House of Commons Thursday. The government bill was initiated in the Senate last October after a Quebec Superior Court decision found parts of the Indian Act violate the Charter rights of indigenous women and children. Despite a looming Supreme Court deadline, the Senate passed a major amendment to the bill that would have expanded patient eligibility.
