The Senate on Thursday voted 56-42 to confirm Richard Grenell, President Donald Trump’s nominee for the ambassadorship to Germany. He also worked briefly as a national security and foreign policy spokesman on Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in 2012. With his confirmation, Grenell becomes one of the most prominent openly gay Trump appointees. Germany has seen a rise in anti-American sentiment since Trump assumed office, and foreign policy experts have warned about the already tenuous transatlantic relationship. “Donald Trump is the first U.S. president since World War II to fundamentally question the ideas and institutions of the liberal international order.”
