Security guards paid for by the taxpayer will guard MPs' offices during their surgeries

Security guards funded by taxpayers will look after MPs' offices during their constituency surgeries under new plans being drawn up to protect politicians from death threats. Sources confirmed that the extra protection – along with CCTV cameras for their homes and offices – will be provided for MPs who request it. But parliamentary expenses watchdog the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is now set to agree to fund requests from concerned MPs themselves – including security guards for their surgeries if necessary. Labour MP Paula Sherriff, who last week accused Boris Johnson of inciting hatred towards MPs, welcomed the new move. She said it would have to be decided on a case-by-case basis but added: 'We shouldn't vilify anybody who decides they do want security guards because we are vulnerable in those surgeries, if we're honest.'
