Supplied Geothermal energy plays an important role in New Zealand's electricity supply. Dr Isabelle Chambefort - leader of the GNS next generation geothermal project - explained it like this: "Deep supercritical geothermal refers to super-hot fluids that are found deep within the earth. Chambefort said deep geothermal initiatives were under way in a number of countries. In New Zealand, supercritical geothermal research is focused on the Taupō Volcanic Zone - the area between Lake Taupō and Kawerau. Industry was looking to science to provide information that would reduce uncertainties and risks of exploration and development of deep geothermal resources, Chambefort said.
