Schools, Health Centers Battle Rising Flu Cases

Sumter County is now reporting elevated levels of flu activity, said Daniel Chacreton, epidemiology and emergency preparedness manager for the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County. It’s unusual to see flu activity blanket all areas of the U.S. at the same time, said Dan Jernigan, director of the CDC’s influenza division, in a press call Friday. Locally, Chacreton said, emergency room visits are increasing and flu activity levels appear to be higher than usual overall. Schools Hit HardFlorida schools are an increasingly growing concern in the midst of peak flu season. Gulf County School District, located in the Panhandle, suspended class Friday for more than 1,900 students enrolled in all schools.
