The night before the release of Téa Mutonji’s debut story collection, Shut Up You’re Pretty, her friends gathered in her living room to celebrate. That experience might fluster even a seasoned author, but Mutonji embraced the moment. Through a series of 18 strikingly raw vignettes, Loli’s identity flows like the Congolese river she is named after. There’s Catherine Hernandez and her 2017 novel Scarborough, the success of which helped land the author a two-title deal with HarperCollins Canada. Her novel was joined by Carrianne Leung’s well-received story collection That Time I Loved You on this year’s Canada Reads longlist.
