Salt piled high as local authorities begin to count the cost

Local authorities are set to begin counting the costs of gritting roads this week as freezing snow and ice hit much of the road network. of personnel from over 40 organisations such as local authorities, motorway operators and Public Private Partnership companies. TII allocates more then €5.3 million to local authorities annually for winter operations and itself purchases approximately €3.5 million of salt stocks each year. The authority provides local authorities with an annual allocation of salt for use on national roads, and manages the distribution of salt on behalf of the Department of Transport, for use on regional and local roads. Asked about the potential damage to roads from grit, TII said it used salt, and salt did not harm the roads.
