BACHOK: Spirit familiars (saka) may now find a 'home' at a university laboratory in Kelantan. A group of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) researchers have recently revealed their plan to build a laboratory specifically to study the presence of supernatural beings commonly associated with incidents of “possessions”. The idea was hatched by Assoc Prof Dr Yohan Kurniawan, Dr Alexander Stark and Dr Burhan Che Daud following success in studying spirit familiars through several methods based on “socio-culture, psychology and science”. Yohan, Stark and Burhan had studied 10 “patients” aged between 21 and 80 who claimed to have owned spirit familiars through a “concession” made between their families and the supernatural. The academicians were also planning to study the methods used by local shamans to “cure” possessions.
