Before there was Donald Trump, before there was Sarah Palin, there was Elsie Wayne. Wayne went from city councillor to mayor to MP for Saint John, never losing an election. Party veterans seemed alternately horrified or awed by the piquant politician from Saint John, but they couldn't dispute her success. As a Saint Johner, I sometimes found myself apologizing for or explaining away the Elsie Wayne phenomenon to those who asked. The funeral service for Elsie Wayne was being held on Saturday at RiverCross Church in Saint John, N.B.
