GOMBAK: “Strap your children into baby car seats, put on your seat belt and obey the law on your balik kampung drive.”These words of advice were from Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar during the launch of a Hari Raya road safety campaign here yesterday. He met with drivers at the Gombak Toll Plaza and distributed gift packages to wish them a safe drive back to their hometowns. Kamaruddin said the Chinese New Year road safety campaign successfully reduced the accident rate to 20,829 cases this year from 21,041 cases in 2018, adding that he hoped to see the same reduction for the Raya season. “We reduced the death rate by 19 deaths per day in 2013 to 18 deaths a day in 2018,” he said. More than two million vehicles are expected to hit the road during the balik kampung exodus.
