Sabah rivers being cleaned up for flood mitigation - Nation

KOTA KINABALU: Immediate measures are underway to clear up the Sungai Kedamaian and other rivers in Kota Belud to alleviate the frequent flooding situation in the northern district. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the state Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) would be carrying out short term flood mitigation measures in the rivers there. Floods have become a regular occurrence in Kota Belud as the river mouths of the Sungai Kadamaian and Sungai Tampasuk have become clogged with rocks and silt following the Mount Kinabalu earthquake in 2015. Rahman said the Federal government had allocated some RM80mil for flood mitigation works of the Kadamaian and Tampasuk rivers in the district. “We are also looking at how we can activate flood evacuation centres more rapidly,” Rahman added.
