This is a story about how NHL hockey has not changed. And yet, this NHL regular season begins as Major League Baseball winds down its own season. There were 2.99 goals per game in the season that ended in 1995, and scoring was dramatically higher throughout the 1980s. All of which is to say, while other sports have wrestled with what to do about fundamental changes to their game at the highest professional level, NHL hockey still looks a lot like NHL hockey. It isn’t still the good old hockey game, to be sure.
