SME contribution to GDP to increase this year, says association


KUALA LUMPUR (April 11): The small and medium enterprises (SME) contribution to the economy is expected to increase by roughly 1% to 38% this year, said SME Association of Malaysia president Datuk Michael Kang. The SME sector's contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) currently stands at 36.3% as of 2015. Kang said SME's contribution to the GDP for 2016, which has not yet been released, "should easily be about 37%". He said factors that may influence the rise include the declaration of 2017 as "SME year" as well as the rise of digital economy. "People always think that because of changing oil prices, our inflation rate will increase.
