SC stays HC order on retirement age of FFs in govt jobs

The Supreme Court has stayed for eight weeks a High Court order which had declared illegal a provision of Public Servant Retirement (Amendment) Act, 2013, which allowed raising the age limit for retirement of freedom fighters in government jobs. The freedom fighter government employees’ retirement age was raised to 60 years from 59 years under the 2013 law. Earlier on April 11, declaring the decision of increasing the retirement age of freedom fighters in government jobs to 60 years illegal, the High Court suggested that the age limit be 61. In its observation, the court said when the retirement age of all public servants was 57, the freedom fighters were honoured by increasing the age limit to 59. In 2009, the government amended the Public Servants (Retirement) Act raising the retirement age limit of the freedom fighters in government jobs from 57 to 59 years.
