SC: Hold Gazipur city polls by June 28

The Supreme Court has ordered the authorities concerned to hold the Gazipur City Corporation election by June 28. A four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order on Thursday, scrapping the High Court order that had postponed the Gazipur city polls for three months. On Tuesday, the Election Commission decided to move the Appellate Division against the High Court order at a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda. Earlier, Awami League mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam and BNP candidate Hasan Uddin Sarkar, filed separate petitions against the High Court’s stay order. On Sunday, the High Court postponed the election for three months.
