Ruto has signed Act giving him immunity against ICC - Rights groups claim

President William Ruto's signing of the Malabo Protocol of the Constitutive Act of the African Union will see him immune to prosecution by the International Criminal Court, two civil groups have claimed. The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) in a statement on Tuesday claimed the move means ICC cannot press charges against the sitting PresidentThe President signed the Act on July 24. If Ruto has signed as claimed, a three-month process that will see Kenya's president granted immunity will kick off. According to the Act, the AU will only intervene upon the recommendation of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union. They also demanded there should be recognition of the primacy of African judicial mechanisms and AU decision-making organs over the ICC.
