Ruto condemns Niger coup, calls for release of president


Speaking on Friday, President William Ruto termed the happenings 'an unconstitutional change of government' and called for the release of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, who has allegedly been held captive following the Wednesday coup. The Head of State further stated that the coup went against the constitutive act of the African Union which 'condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government'. In a statement, Ruto further urged all parties to engage in constructive dialogue to avoid jeopardising the livelihoods and lives of Nigeriens. In his statement, the Kenyan government offered to assist Niger to resolve any conflict should it be deemed appropriate by the African Union. The coup has been roundly condemned by international bodies including the African Union, the West African regional bloc (Ecowas), the EU and the UN.
