The hackers appeared to have been able to identify the stolen files because the contractor used antivirus software made by Kaspersky Lab, a Russian company, The Wall Street Journal reported. The theft was considered to be one of the most significant security breaches suffered by the NSA in recent years. The hack is understood to have taken place in 2015 but was not discovered until the spring of last year.
