Rushnara Ali: Rana Plaza collapse could’ve been averted

The collapse of Rana Plaza at Savar was not an accident and it could have been avoided if proper measures were taken in time, Bangladesh-born British MP Rushnara Ali has observed. At least 1,136 people, mostly readymade garment workers of five factories, were killed in the Rana Plaza collapse on April 24, 2013. The UK lawmaker’s remarks came on Tuesday during her visit to the training centre of the Marks and Start Project at the Ganakbari centre of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in Savar’s Ashulia. Many who are currently working at different factories after being trained at the CRP-Ganakbari Centre also shared their experiences and successes with her at the session. Rushanara, the British prime minister’s trade envoy to Bangladesh, was accompanied by British High Commissioner in Dhaka Alison Blake.
