In 2013, he consolidated his hold over the Daily Mail and General Trust, which his great grandfather established in the 1920s to hold the family’s newspaper interests. Rothermere quietly bought up the voting shares that he didn’t already own from his relatives. Despite having only a 36 per cent economic interest, he assumed absolute power over the publisher’s destiny. Given that he controls the company, why go to the trouble of buying out external investors?
