MANILA, Philippines — Philippine college basketball will be missing one of its most recognizable voices. Rolly Manlapaz, most remembered for his barking gig in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the Philippines basketball games, passed away on Thursday afternoon after his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease. Earlier reports indicate that Manlapaz passed away at 1:10 p.m. at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center in Quezon City. A product of the Ateneo de Manila University, Manlapaz’s foray into public address announcing (barking) came in 1998 for the Metropolitan Basketball Association. He went on to carve out tours of duty in the Philippine Basketball Association, the Philippine Basketball League, Shakey’s V-League, and then in the collegiate scene where he became a sonic fixture.
