Rohingya militants in Myanmar declare ceasefire

Rohingya militants on Sunday declared a ceasefire in their fight against Myanmar troops in conflict-ridden northern Rakhine state, as refugees continued to stream into neighbouring Bangladesh. The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, whose attacks on police prompted an enormous military crackdown on the country's persecuted Rohingya minority, announced in a statement posted to Twitter a month-long "humanitarian pause" in the violence. The ceasefire would "enable humanitarian actors to assess and respond to the humanitarian crisis" in Rakhine state, the group said. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since violence broke out in August, bringing with them stories of atrocities allegedly carried out by Myanmar soldiers. They say the army, in collaboration with police and local Buddhists, burned homes and shot civilians.
