Robyn Urback: By rejigging electoral reform committee, Liberals might’ve just turned a blunder into another win

That’s not to suggest that the Liberals shouldn’t be praised for abandoning their majority on their electoral reform committee: they should. It makes sense, then, that that insult would precede what many have characterized as an embarrassing climbdown for the Liberals on the electoral reform file. The Conservatives, thus, are left shrieking among themselves about the need for a referendum on electoral reform, while the Liberals, the NDP, Greens and Bloc hold hands as they skip merrily into their first committee meeting. And perhaps the move did have some sort of ephemeral humbling effect, but it only lasted long enough for the prime minister to draft a statement boasting about fulfilling his party’s promise to do things differently. If there’s one thing at which the Liberals are absolutely unparalleled, it’s turning their blunders into major successes.
